ItsDillerTime Mission at the Missions
Our Diller Family adventure this year has a distinct mission, to pull in and learn to love God and each other more. By exploring all God’s creation around the US and living in a 40ft bus, we are testing the living limits while simultaneously experiencing something epic. It’s an odd balance of frustration and awe. This season of marriage and parenting has had some real challenges that pushed us to take on this adventure as a kind of relationship therapy. Our main issue has been that we forgot to bring a team of therapists 🤣 so between yelling at the kids for… being kids, we also try to practice humility and seek forgiveness because we are all right in front of each other with no escape or way to ignore anything. Prayerfully this is pushing us in the right direction.
We also hope sharing our testimony with others and by sharing the people and places we experience, hopefully we will explore some educational and growth opportunities.
This week we are growing in San Antonio and our home schooling is focused on some of the history in Texas and San Antonio. The Franciscan Fryers developed Missions along the San Antonio River in the 1700s. The Franciscans brought Christ to the native people of south Texas while also feeding and protecting the people. This is seen in the agricultural advances and protective shelters developed and still standing to some degree today. While some of this European style development also brought harm in the form of new diseases and in some cases invasive cultural changes, it’s fascinating to observe how these Missions stuck and became part of the new growing communities. The Missions also reflect the skills and heart of the native people and brought a new culture to the forefront of Texas as a future republic. Amazing how much and how old the history is here.
Visiting the Alamo and seeing a Mission that stood against an army and became a rally cry for Texas and the people of the growing United States offers insight to the pride of Texas.
Our day was completed with a stroll around the River Walk and experiencing the vibrant downtown life nested around the Alamo offering a bit of juxtaposition to our exploration of San Antonio. Really found beauty in many unique ways.
