Check Engine… on your home?

Like me, you’ve probably heard RV folk talk about mechanical issues. Seems it’s an expectation or right of passage for RV life. Well I guess we are getting all our full time RV qualification out of the way early 😏

While our DillerTime Bus is used it’s only 3k miles so barely broken in so I expected we might make it a little while before finding a trusted mechanic. Unfortunately as we checked out of the Camping World Racing Resort (great stay by the way) our Check Engine light came on with a Low Coolant warning. 😕

As a newbie RV family we spent about 2 hrs calling the various entities related to our bus. For everyone’s education, the bus is a Fleetwood Discovery; however, Fleetwood the company only accounts for the coach or living space and pointed us toward a Freightliner Chassis mechanic for coolant issues. First mechanical lesson, keep a list of all the contractors (engine, chassis, coach and all the appliances each by brand name) for service. We have an extended warranty but that works by finding someone to fix something and then them clearing the repair through the warranty. They can’t tell me who to contact to get the work done so do some advance work if you wanna avoid sitting in a parking lot like I did for a few hours.

After finding out that Fleetwood mechanics don’t necessarily work on engines unless they are qualified on those specific engines I was pleased to discover a truck repair company 8 miles from my location and within reach of my potentially overheating RV. So when it goes and the repair is still ongoing two days later. Can’t find the leak, but the coolant is still going down so the mystery will continue to unfold while we also learned another major lesson, when you have to leave your home at the repair shop you have to clean out the refrigerator and have a go bag, ready with your clothing and toiletries. So prep for rapid departures?

All still good and thankfully family is in town so some added quality time isn’t a bad thing. Managed to see our oldest, my sister and parents as well as do some volunteer service with Movement Foundation packing hygiene kits for Convoy of Hope to take up to the mountains

🙏 for the ongoing recovery efforts in the mountains and for a good answer and fix to the coolant issue and then back on the road. Next stop… The City of Brotherly Love!
